MYANMAR, A NEW FRONTIER?

You might want to add Myanmar to the list of Asian countries with potentially booming hotel industries.

Major hotel companies are starting to show interest in Myanmar, the land formerly known as Burma, as it begins to emerge from political isolation, Reuters reported.

Starwood, Marriott and Carlson are some of the major chains that said they see potential in the country of 60 million people that has only 570 hotels and 160 guesthouses totaling 24,692 rooms.

And there’s potential for tourism. Between April 2010 and March 2011, 424,000 tourists visited the country. By comparison, 19 million tourists visited neighboring Thailand, which has more than 4,000 hotels.
