Pennsylvania collected more taxes from its nine gaming facilities than any other state, including Nevada with 260 gaming venues, the Allentown Morning Call reported.

Even Nevada was surprised. “Really? That’s incredible,” Nevada gaming board researcher Mike Lawton said when told his state had been dethroned. “You guys must be charging a whole lot of money to run a casino there.”

PA collected $1.08 billion at a tax rate of 55 percent of gross winnings, followed by Indiana with $878 million in taxes from 13 casinos with a rate of 31 percent. Nevada came in third at $831 million with its tax rate of 8 percent.

The highest tax rate in the country will be Maryland’s 67 percent, which made it difficult to find bidders for its casinos that have yet to open.
