Column: A Consultant Disses Lightfoot’s Casino Sites. Now What?

My comment:

I felt the initial casino revenue potential would be closer to $1.5 billion and the potential of the other sites, overstated. Plus, they would be drawing the majority of their play from residents, harming existing casinos, and VGT operators. The majority of win from a downtown Chicago casino would be from visitors, convention attendees and business travelers.

Convention and tradeshow organizers should look at the Las Vegas Strip results, and recognize that even though a few attendees may miss a meeting because of the nearby gaming, the total attendance and number of exhibitors will expand substantially because of the nearby gaming and quality entertainment that accompanies a destination casino resort.

Delta’s Weekly Reno-Atlanta Flights to Become Daily in 2020

My comment:

Reno is about 2,400 miles from Atlanta, over 6 hours by plane and 3 time zones away. Atlanta to Atlantic City is around 800 miles, one third the distance, or less than 2 hours flight time. And, as a casino destination, Reno is much smaller than AC.

So why is it that AC has never been able to attract a major carrier from a major city like Atlanta – home of America's busiest airport, with over 90 flights a day – that go between Atlanta and Las Vegas, 6 or 7 nonstop?

The report by Union Gaming Analytics might have thrown cold water on plans for a Chicago casino as outlined in recently enacted gaming legislation, but in doing so, the report has opened a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you.

My proposal is for Illinois and Chicago to take the exact opposite approach. Instead of proposing what would amount to a slot barn with little to no likelihood of success, dream big. Go for a world-class integrated resort reflecting Chicago’s status as a world-class city.

Golden Nugget Poised to Make Internet Gaming History

My Comment:

Today's article indicates the growth of online gaming and online sports betting in Atlantic City far exceeds other states, even Nevada, and there is a good reason for it. New Jersey has only one area offering slot machines and table games, Atlantic City, which is less convenient to over 90% of NJ's population, than live gaming in Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware.

Online gaming has been beneficial to New Jersey, for several reasons. First, it allows the state to compete with illegal overseas gaming sites that pay no taxes, employee no US citizens, have little or no oversight, and may offer inferior odds. Second, it provides new tax revenues and some jobs for the operators for the online games.
