I worked with the legislature, and state police, as a consultant to the Delta Steamship Company, to help them with the original riverboat casino bill. I had suggested only 10 or 12 riverboats, rather than the 15 allowed but I had no input on the last minute addendum, that allowed slots in truck stops and bars. Later slots were added to race tracks, which added to the glut of gaming, especially in Shreveport/Bossier City.
But with sports betting allowed in Mississippi - on the Gulf Coast and Mississippi River - Louisiana needs to approve the same type of betting for its casinos and racetracks, to remain competitive.
But for those concerned about compulsive behavior, they should follow the guidelines of Mississippi, that prohibit all forms of gaming and sports betting online.
